WHAT TO EXPECT
Consultation & Patch Test
Your laser journey begins with a consultation where we will discuss your treatment goals, medical history and previous hair removal, before assessing your skin tone and hair type.
A mandatory patch test will be carried out before your first treatment to assess how your skin responds to the laser and help us select appropriate treatment settings. This is also your opportunity to ask any questions before beginning your course.
Your Laser Treatment
Before treatment, the area will be checked and prepared and you'll be provided with protective eyewear. Tattoos and other areas that should not be treated will be carefully avoided or covered.
Your practitioner will select the appropriate laser wavelength and settings for your skin and hair type before systematically treating the area with the Candela GentleMax Pro.
During treatment, Candela's integrated cooling technology helps protect and cool the skin. Sensation varies depending on the treatment area and individual, but many clients describe each pulse as a brief warm or snapping sensation.
Treatment times vary considerably depending on the area – smaller areas can be completed very quickly, while larger areas such as the legs naturally take longer.
After Your Treatment
It's completely normal to experience some temporary redness, warmth or slight swelling around the hair follicles following laser treatment. This usually settles naturally after treatment.
You'll receive clear aftercare instructions explaining how to look after your skin between appointments. This includes protecting the treated area from sun exposure, using a broad-spectrum SPF, and temporarily avoiding products or activities that could irritate or heat the skin.
Over the following days and weeks, treated hairs will gradually begin to shed. Because laser only effectively targets hairs at particular stages of their growth cycle, a course of treatments is required to achieve the best reduction.
We'll assess your progress and regrowth throughout your course and adjust your treatment plan where appropriate.
THE SCIENCE: HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?
Laser hair removal works by delivering controlled pulses of light energy that are attracted to the melanin (pigment) within the hair.
The energy travels down the hair and is converted into heat within the follicle, damaging the structures responsible for producing hair while minimising damage to the surrounding skin.
Why do I need multiple sessions?
Hair grows in different stages and laser treatment is most effective when a hair is in its active growth phase (anagen) and remains connected to the follicle.
Not every hair is in this stage at the same time. This is why laser hair removal cannot be completed in a single treatment and appointments need to be appropriately spaced to target new cycles of active hair growth.
Most clients require a course of approximately 6–8 treatments, although this varies depending on the area being treated, hair type, skin tone, hormones and individual response.
Following a successful course, clients can typically expect a significant long-term reduction in hair growth, with remaining hair often becoming finer and less noticeable. Occasional maintenance treatments may be recommended over time, particularly for hormonally influenced areas such as the face.
